ABOUT ME

Joanne White is an artist and photographer based in North Vancouver. Her work explores themes of memory, connection and transformation.

Joanne’s interest in photography is primarily analogue / film photography, with expired and experimental films, double exposures and transformative processes like Polaroid Emulsion Lifts. Through these creative processes, she challenges traditional image-making and the original state of a photograph, reinterpreting the moment and presenting memories in new forms.

The focus of Joanne’s drawings and paintings is mainly figurative, and she enjoys life drawing, with the practice and challenge of drawing the figure. Most recently she’s drawn dancers, with the added challenge of constant movement and flow. Her drawings often become studies, inspiring new works and explorations in other media. Expired and experimental films in her photography practice have influenced a shift in her painting colour palette to less realistic tones and a more playful and abstract approach to colour.

A graduate of Capilano College’s Studio Arts Program, Joanne has exhibited locally and internationally in group exhibits, been published in print magazines and several zines, and her analogue photography’s garnered recognition, including awards and honourable mentions, in international contests. She volunteered as co-creator and co-producer of the C41 Coffee Film Photo Contest, Seasons 1–3.
