ABOUT ME
Joanne is multidisciplinary artist, working in painting, drawing and photography.
Her artwork is mainly figurative, and drawing is the foundation of her practice. Joanne loves to draw, especially life drawing, with the practice and challenge of drawing the figure. Her life drawings often become studies, inspiring new works and explorations in other media.
In Joanne’s series of Swimmer paintings, the figure and her love of water intersect. She’s fascinated with the body in water – suspended, moving, reflected, fragmented by distortions – and in capturing water itself, with its range of colours and depths, the nature of its surface and light passing through, and the sensory experience of swimming and being in water.
Her interest in photography is primarily film photography, with expired and experimental films, double exposures, and creative analogue processes, like polaroid lifts. Expired and experimental films have influenced a shift in her painting colour palette to less realistic tones and a more playful and creative approach to colour.
Joanne studied Studio Arts at Capilano College (now University), has exhibited in a number of Group Exhibitions and Art Events, is the recipient of a FANS Grant for Artistic Production, and volunteers as co-producer of the C41 Coffee Film Photo Contest, a locally exhibited monthly contest that’s open Internationally.
