ABOUT ME
Joanne White is a multidisciplinary artist exploring themes of memory, perception and transformation.
Joanne’s work is rooted in process and material. With analogue photography, she treats each medium as an active participant in the work rather than a neutral tool. Each film type offers a unique colour palette, and paired with different cameras, results are diverse and creative: expired film brings unpredictable shifts in colour and pronounced grain; her Holgas (plastic cameras) offer a unique aesthetic, evoking an atmospheric sense of place, more like a memory recalled; and her Belair 6 x12 double exposures (in-camera) layer impossible landscapes. Experimentation, embracing imperfections and accidental discoveries are key to Joanne’s practice.
The focus of Joanne’s drawings and paintings is mainly figurative. She enjoys life drawing, with the practice and challenge of drawing the figure, but most recently she’s drawn dancers, with the added challenge of constant movement and flow. Her drawings often become studies, inspiring new works and explorations in other media. Expired and experimental films in her photography practice have influenced a shift in her painting colour palette to less realistic tones and a more playful and abstract approach to colour.
Joanne is graduate of Capilano College’s Studio Arts Program, Canada. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group exhibits in Canada, US and Scotland. Publications showcasing her work include PhotoEd Magazine, Black & White Photography, and several Zines. Awards and accolades include Honourable Mentions in the 26th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards (2025), and winning Bronze in Analog Sparks, International Analog Photography Contest (2024). And she volunteered as co-creator and co-producer of the C41 Coffee Film Photo Contest, Seasons 1–3.
Joanne lives and works in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.
