About the Series
The five original black & white film photographs were taken in Maui, Hawaii. While initially drawn to colour to capture the lush, tropical vibrance, I found black & white more evocative and atmospheric. These five images became even more expressive when accidental colour information was included during the scanning process.

I was intrigued by the hidden colour and behavioural pattern across the series: a defined centre strip, with more pronounced or varied colour, adding a unique and abstract element. And the increased noise / grain brought a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of vintage postcards and frozen video frames from 1980s bands like Duran Duran and The Art of Noise.

Transformed by their saturated, and in some cases abstract colours, they feel like a memory vividly recalled. In a way, they are memory made visible, and would not exist if not for the original black & white images and an accidental discovery.

Two images from this series were featured in PhotoED Magazine’s Winter 2024–25: COLOUR Issue — Digital Bonus Issue.
